In my 20 years of psychiatric practice in hospital, outpatient, community, and municipal settings, I’ve witnessed and participated in harms perpetrated by a pathologizing and disempowering health care system. Reworking Psychiatry is a fully independent practice, committed to minimizing and repairing harm caused by previous treatment and stigmatization. I aim to provide respectful and collaborative care, specializing in ‘second opinions’ and a reconceptualization of pathology-based approaches.
I am not anti-medication, and I carefully prescribe to many of my clients, but I challenge the dominant narratives of psychiatric disease and the belief in a ‘chemical imbalance’. When appropriate, I help with careful deprescribing, utilizing extended, client-paced medication tapering, to help clients achieve goals of using less, or no medications.
We may use compounding pharmacies or home-generated liquid formulations for gradual medication reductions or microtapering, often using a hyperbolic design, to reduce medications comfortably and safely. We’ll address lifestyle factors, and collaborate with any therapists, physicians, and any other care providers and supports you wish to include.
